The Symba Spotlight Part 16: Obed Owusu Amoah

Obed Owusu Amoah is a student at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, who is interning at Eak and Associates. His responsibilities include auditing and accounting at this agency. His dream is to one day work for Bank of America and he has wise words for all: “You are your own future, so make it better.” Read more about his incredible story below.

Tell us about yourself.

I have loved numbers since birth and bringing solutions to complex business and social issues. My academic work is centered on accounting, auditing, and taxation.

Apart from these, I have an interest in investment banking as well as business law which I am currently undergoing online courses on.

I am seeking to land a final internship at the Bank of America, where I can learn and practice more on investment banking. I'm looking forward to becoming a chartered accountant mastering in finance and investment banking. I am also looking at establishing a group of companies, which I have started with one, to help give opportunities to more youths like myself.

I write in my leisure time and I currently opened a blog. I do a little emceeing, motivational speeches and talks when invited.

Tell us about your remote internship. What is your title, and what are the projects and daily tasks you work on?

I am an accounting and audit intern at Eak and Associates, a credible accounting firm in Ghana.

The firm is duly authorized to undertake audit and assurance, accountancy, taxation, business advisory services in Ghana and to offer equally high-quality, internationally acceptable standard professional services.

I am tasked with tax calculations, data entry analysis, and computation of accounts for the financial statements. I also join the audit team in auditing various companies.

Symba Spotlight

What are you enjoying most about your remote internship?

Having an internship here is one of the best because I had the first-hand experience of business advisory, tax certifications as well as the auditing of companies. It is involved and educational. There is always room to learn new things in the corporate world.

What new skills have you learned so far?

I have advanced in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite, Tally and Quick Book Software for accounting. I have had practical experience in auditing and its processes.

How have your company and internship manager supported you through your internship?

The company, internship manager as well as the staff of the company have taught me a lot in the accounting field and have made meaning to things I studied in school. There is patience to provide detailed answers to the questions I ask. Thank you to everyone there.

What advice would you give to other interns about to embark on their first remote internship?

You have to step out of your comfort zone to achieve what you want to. It is not easy as said. it can be tedious but you have to stay focused and seek to obtain the best from wherever you find yourself. Try as much as to network with the people around you and learn from anyone when given the chance. Be confident, determined, and hardworking.
