The Symba Spotlight Part Nine: Arantxa Sarmiento
Arantxa Sarmiento is an intern with Citibank. As a business owner and a future analyst, her internship has proved especially useful. She lives by the quote "self discipline is the center of all success," which has led her to where she is today. Read more about her and what she's up to below.
Tell us about yourself.
Hi, my name is Arantxa Sarmiento, a Colombian immigrant residing in New York City. I am currently pursuing a BBA degree in finance with a minor in Economics from Zicklin School of Business. Besides being a full-time student, I am the owner of a small business in the beauty industry located in Queens, NY.
I enjoy being able to express myself and pushing my limits, so dancing salsa and CrossFit are among my favorite things to do.
I look forward to solidifying my career to make an impact in the finance industry, in my community, and create a platform where I can be able to help future generations.
Tell us about your remote internship. What is your title, and what are the projects and daily tasks you work on?
I am currently enrolled in the Institutional Banking Virtual Internship Program at Citibank. I have been assigned to projects including research, tracks an index keeping in mind specific client's needs, work on comparable analysis and discounted cash flow models to determine valuations, and more.
What are you enjoying most about your remote internship?
Having the opportunity to experience and getting exposed to work I would be doing daily in an analyst position.
What new skills have you learned so far?
Independence is probably the biggest take away from this experience. Being remote has made my experience a little more complicated since I don’t have my team next to me in the case I have a doubt or question, but working independently has proved to be very important. My internship taught me to make my own decisions and do things on my own. Being able to work independently with little guidance is very important in the working world.
How have your company and internship manager supported you through your internship?
They have been very helpful and understanding during these times.
What advice would you give to other interns about to embark on their first remote internship?
Try to speak up if you don't have the answers, use it as a networking experience, and show off you're capable of handling the workload.
